For over two decades, Uliano Vezzani has been shaping the sporting identity of Piazza di Siena. As the mastermind behind the courses, the Italian course designer shares his deep connection with Rome, the emotion of working in such an iconic venue, and what we can expect for Sunday’s Rolex Gran Premio Roma.
“It’s a privilege to be the course designer in Rome,” begins Uliano Vezzani, eyes set on the arena he knows so well. “There’s no other place like this in the world. For me, it’s not just a job — it’s a pleasure. Rome is unique, and the tradition here is something truly special.”
Uliano has been designing the courses in Piazza di Siena “for quite some time,” as he humbly puts it — in fact, it’s been over 20 years. A tenure that reflects not only his expertise but the trust and admiration of an entire sport. “It’s one of those events every course designer dreams of doing,” he says. “It really is an honour.”
This year’s Rolex Gran Premio Roma, held as part of the Rolex Series, carries even more significance. “It’s a very important Grand Prix,” says Uliano. And now, being part of the Rolex Series gives it even more visibility and prestige. We are lucky to have such sponsors, especially Rolex. They make it possible to organise a competition of this level.”
So what has Uliano Vezzani prepared for the riders this year? “As always, it will be a true Grand Prix. We’ve studied a few new lines and added some new jumps. It will be technical, complete, with height, and strategy — everything. And of course, exciting for the public, both here and watching from home.”
Despite recent rain, the grass footing at Villa Borghese has held up beautifully. “Honestly, this year the ground is fantastic,” he notes with satisfaction. “Yesterday, the horses jumped beautifully. It will allow us to create a proper test, without compromising safety or performance.”
And when asked who he sees as the winner of this year’s Rolex Gran Premio Roma? He smiles. “There are many… many good riders. It’s impossible to say. Let’s just wait and see. The course will decide.”
